About the City of Hamilton
The City of Hamilton is the vibrant capital of Bermuda, located in the centre of the island next to beautiful Hamilton Harbour. Founded in 1815, Hamilton is a blend of old and new, where you can spot business men in classic Bermuda shorts, blazer and long socks heading to the office, or join the trendy set as they take a happy hour cruise on a Friday evening in the summer.
Restaurants and retailers line the streets, along with office buildings, banks, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and St. Theresa’s Cathedral. Quiet parks provide tranquil spots to picnic and art enthusiasts can visit the Bermuda National Gallery and Bermuda Society of Arts, both located in City Hall. Guarding the City is Fort Hamilton, worth the 20 minute uphill walk for the panoramic view. Here you can enjoy a picnic near the now-silent cannons, and explore the moat which today serves as a greenhouse of tropical plants. The House of Assembly is where the elected Members of Parliament meet to run the country and City Hall is where the elected council meets to run the City.
Dining options are many and varied, with coffee shops, cafes, diners and lunch wagons throughout the City, as well as fine dining, international cuisine and traditional pubs. Many restaurants have been popular dining spots for over 50 years. Harbour Nights Street Festival takes place along Front Street from 7 to 10 pm on Wednesdays in the summer months, and the City hosts an annual Fashion Festival and City Food Festival. The winter activity programme includes bagpipers performing the Skirling Ceremony, guided walking tours and the Bermuda Gombey Revue. From April to October you can join the City Town Crier for a walking tour on weekdays.
Retail therapy is available, from department stores to boutiques hidden in lanes, to bespoke stores featuring an eclectic range of items. Jewellery unique to Bermuda makes the perfect memento of your island visit and you can purchase a pair of our famous shorts to take home. Artwork, tee-shirts, souvenirs, ladies and men’s wear can all be found when browsing Hamilton’s shops.
