Fort George

St. George's Town, Bermuda

In 1612 Governor Richard Moore chose this site, the highest hill in St. George's known as Riches Mount, for a lookout tower. Fort George was constructed in 1788 and you can still see a 25-ton cannon from Royal Gun Factory that points towards the Town of St. George. Today the fort is occupied by Bermuda Maritime Operations, a 24-hour operational hub providing coastal radar tracking surveillance, maritime rescue coordination and seaport security . The fort can be reached from Fort George Hill, which is a steep climb, but worth the view from the top. Bus routes 1, 3, 10 or 11 from Hamilton.
